Grover Cleveland Fished Here

The Frenchtown Star gives this account of the time Grover Cleveland came from his home in Princeton and went fishing with Howard Eilenberg, manager of the Warford House (now the Frenchtown Inn), and Johnson Warford, the hotel owner's brother-in-law, in 1901:

About 300 people assembled at the railroad station on Friday morning, (Sept.) 27th to see ex-President Grover Cleveland who arrived on the 10:08 train for a day's fishing. Mr. Cleveland was accompanied by Hon. Geo. O. Vanderbelt, also a resident of Princeton.

As the party were in a hurry to get on the water, but few were fortunate enough to get an introduction, and a hand shake from Grover. Mr. Vanderbelt and Howard Eilenberg occupied one boat and Mr. Cleveland and Johnson Warford the other. The boats headed down the river, fishing at the most desirable points until they reached Byram station, where the ex-President and Mr. Vanderbelt boarded the 7:07 train for home. Messrs. Warford and Eilenberg returning on the 6:56 train.

The catch for the day was 30 bass, the largest weighing four pounds. We understand the distinguished visitors were well pleased with the trip, and expressed a desire to try it again in the near future.

One wonders what became of the boats.
