Jack Mannino, a Frenchtown pizza pioneer

PIZZERIAS

Jack's Pizza – Pizza-maker Jack Mannino opened his pizzeria in 1972 on western corner of Trenton Avenue and Bridge Street in Frenchtown.

He was born in Sicily and operated a bakery there for 15 years before coming to New York City in 1967. He opened pizzerias in Brooklyn and on Long Island, but didn't want to raise his kids in the city. So he sold those shops in 1970 and came to Hunterdon County.

Once established here, he spread out, establishing pizzerias in Flemington, Lambertville and Nockamixon Township, Pa. In 1981, seeking a more lucrative markup on the dining experience – at least that's what he told me – he opened the Continental Restaurant where Dominick's Pizza Shoppe had been on the southwest corner of Eighth and Harrison streets. (The building would later be a veterinary clinic.) Mannino's sign on the side of the building touted “cuisine-style food.” But his cuisine did not keep pace with his desire to make more money, and the Continental only lasted a few months.

In 1984 Mannino sold the Frenchtown pizzeria business to daughter Rose and her husband Tony Ingrassia, who sold it to Joe and Frank Galasso in 1998.
